Our Own Daniel Flanzig Featured in National AP News Story on Bike Commuting

AP News Story

AP News recently ran a nationwide feature on biking to work, with tips from experienced cyclists and safety advocates on getting started, staying safe, and arriving at the office looking presentable. We were proud to see our own Daniel Flanzig, a partner at Flanzig & Flanzig, LLP and board president of the New York Bicycling Coalition, weigh in on what riders should do after a crash with a car.

The article covers a lot of ground cyclists will recognize. You do not need expensive gear to start commuting by bike; a secondhand bike or a bike-share rental works just fine. Pannier bags can keep your work clothes dry and your back from getting soaked with sweat, and stashing wipes, deodorant, or a spare outfit at the office solves the “arriving sweaty” problem for good.

On safety, the piece is a good refresher: wear a helmet, use lights and bright colors so drivers can see you, and give parked cars a wide berth (the League of American Bicyclists recommends four feet) so you are not caught in a car door's path. Daniel's advice for after a crash is simple and worth remembering: call the police, get the driver's information, and do not skip medical treatment, even if you feel fine at first.
