Sea Cliff Triathlon Brings Community Together – Organized by Local Bike Attorney Daniel Flanzig

Sea Cliff is gearing up for its first-ever triathlon, thanks to the efforts of Sea Cliff resident and experienced triathlete Daniel Flanzig. The inaugural Sea Cliff Triathlon will take place on September 6 at Tappen Beach, featuring a 400-meter swim, a 2-mile run, and a 6-mile bike ride.

“My real goal for this race is that it’s accessible to anybody,” said Flanzig.

Flanzig began competing in duathlons—events combining biking and running—before transitioning to triathlons at the age of 50. But his passion for cycling goes beyond racing. Flanzig is a dedicated New York bike attorney who represents injured cyclists and advocates for safer roads.

A Community Event for All Skill Levels

Originally from Huntington, Flanzig has lived in Sea Cliff for over a decade. He wanted to create something new and exciting for the community. The Sea Cliff Triathlon is designed for both seasoned athletes and beginners, offering shorter distances than a standard sprint triathlon:

  • 400-meter swim
  • 2-mile run
  • 6-mile bike ride

“It’s a distance that’s doable,” Flanzig explained. The event will also include categories for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and a family relay, encouraging youth participation and community involvement.

Partnering with Race Awesome

Flanzig collaborated with Corey Roberts, director of Race Awesome, a well-known running and multisport organizer. “He puts on such a great event. Every event he does is next level, and his energy makes every racer want to have a good time,” Flanzig said.

The idea for the Sea Cliff Triathlon has been in the works for nearly four years, with planning starting two years ago. The Village of Sea Cliff and the Town of Oyster Bay were supportive of the concept, helping make this community-driven race possible.

Why This Race Matters

This isn’t Flanzig’s first experience organizing an event. He has sponsored Race Awesome races and serves on the board of New York Triathlon, another major multisport organization. Last year, he successfully planned a youth triathlon at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club.

The goal for the inaugural race is 100 participants, with a cap of 140 to maintain a safe and enjoyable experience.

For those who love cycling or want to challenge themselves, this is an opportunity to be part of something unique in Sea Cliff.
